Crysis 2: Be the Weapon is a science-fiction first-person shooter. In this second installment in the series, you take on the role of a futuristic Marine battling aliens and other human soldiers in the wreckage of New York. Unlike the previous game -- and its conceptual ancestor Far Cry -- the action does not take place in a jungle, but instead in a set of dense urban ruins.

Your chief tool for surviving this hostile environment is the Nanosuit, a piece of futuristic technology that can enhance your power, stealth, armour or sensors. However, the Nanosuit doesn't have unlimited energy, so its modes have to be used wisely. As tempting as it might seem to unleash your superhuman strength on the first enemy you come across, you may need your reserves later on in the level. As you progress through the level, you'll find yourself fighting bigger and tougher alien threats as well as your own government's attempts to deal with the infestation.

The Crysis series has a reputation for lush (and demanding) graphics, and Far Cry 2 is no exception. Even years after its release, its ruined cityscape and high-tech characters still have the power to impress.

However, Crysis 2: Be the Weapon is more linear in play than its more open predecessors. With a few exceptions, the Far Cry series -- and Crysis along with them -- tend to mix open-world gameplay with shooter action. Missions typically consist of an objective you are expected to complete using the tools at your disposal; levels are designed such that multiple possible strategies can result in victory. However, Crysis 2's level design is less flexible; there are many points in the game when you'll really only have one option. The story and acting have drawn some criticism as well for their derivative nature.

Crysis 2's online multiplayer was notable for its use of the Nanosuit to provide a tactically distinct environment, different from both traditional military shooters and sci-fi shooters such as the Halo series. However, the 2014 demise of GameSpy put an end to Crysis 2's online multiplayer modes.
